Description:
Mary of Bethany will always be remembered for her extravagant act of anointing Jesus with perfume worth the equivalent of a year's wages. Many condemned her for the extravagance. But Jesus praised Mary for her devotion and said that wherever the gospel is preached, her selfless act would be remembered (Mark 14:9). He knew that He was being prepared for His death and burial, and eventual resurrection. As Mary anointed His head and washed His feet with the oil and her tears, the essence of the burial fragrance saturated her. When we allow ourselves to die to our own agendas and those things that make sense to the world, His perfume becomes a part of us, too. Like Mary, we become vessels that carry His fragrance wherever we go.
