Becoming a Pearl of Great Price
For several weeks the message of the pearl of great price had been on my heart. Jesus said that the Kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When He found one of great value, He went away and sold everything he had and bought it (Matt. 13:45-46).
The Kingdom is of such great value that we should be willing to give all we have to gain it. As this revelation makes its way  from our head to our heart, WE then become a pearl of great price to Him. We are incredibly loved by our Creator. We become one He can entrust His mysteries to and, more importantly, we become His friend.
I finally felt released to paint the pearl at the Starting the Year Off Right Conference this month. As I was painting it, Valerie, a woman attending the conference, happened to be seated directly in back of where I was painting. She excitedly approached me as I was painting the pearl to tell me her "pearl" story of God's expression of love to her:
"I decided to make seafood gumbo for Christmas and to invite family over to eat. Much to my surprise all decided to come Christmas Eve, so I doubled the recipe. Everyone ate till full. Christmas day some family members came back for seconds. While I was pouring the leftovers into a bowl, I saw something white fall into the bowl. I found a pearl. My Daddy gave me a 8mm fresh water pearl for Christmas!"
Valerie was amazed that not only would God allow such a pearl to land in her bowl but that within a week she would "happen" to sit directly behind me as I painted the pearl in a stadium filled with thousands of people. It was a double confirmation of God's love and the lengths He will go to declare His love! |
 God is calling us, jostling us as never before so that we are awakened to His relentless, unfailing, unconditional love. There is nothing that can keep Him from loving us with His full, abandoned love.
John of the Cross wrote: "South wind come, you that wakens love, breathe through my garden, let its fragrance flow, and the beloved will feed amid the flowers."
Living in the fullness of His abandoned love lies in the simplicity of continually receiving Him who is Love. We will never find His love in or through religion.
John of the Cross also wrote "God blesses his bride by breathing through her flowering garden, opens all these buds and uncovers the aromatic spices of gifts, and riches; and disclosing this interior treasure and wealth, He reveals all her beauty. Then she is something wonderful to behold and pleasant to handle."
