Extreme makeover with a creative heart
For the last several months my newsletters have conveyed some of what the Lord has been teaching me through revelation as I travel to paint and conduct art workshops. Though creativity is a keyword in all that I do, my underlying message and motivation continues to be that of love.
So how do creativity and love practically walk out in everyday life? Well, let me share a story about my spiritual family and how love manifested itself in a very tangible and creative way.
About eighteen years ago my husband, David, and I founded Blood n Fire, a church/ministry with a heart for the poor. Over the years we sheltered, fed and clothed thousands of homeless in Atlanta, led outreaches, and through Holy Spirit, helped to set drug addicts free.
Within the last few years, the Lord began to reveal how we could move from "warehousing" the poor in a large shelter to become family in a smaller community setting. We began to look for a home for a handful of elderly homeless who had been a part of our ministry family for years.
About four months ago, we found a home nearby -- definitely a fixer-upper. Several of our BnF family began to clean, design and ready the house. There are many creative types in our family: artists, cooks, designers, musicians, dancers, photographers. And they showed up over and over again to combine their creative genes and talents to choose colors, paint walls, hang their paintings, place furniture, landscape overgrown yards, and prepare the welcoming meal.
When we were ready for the grand "unveiling" we all agreed that the home could be on the East Atlanta tour of homes! And together we celebrated the arrival of our former warehouse dwellers to their new digs. The joy and surprise on their faces said it all. One of the new residents said with tears in his eyes that he just couldn't believe we had prepared them such a beautiful home in such a welcoming neighborhood. To sum it up, they felt the love of a family.
My encouragement is for you to use YOUR creativity in a way to help others. Seeing the joy on their faces and their hope for a future is hard to describe but not easily forgotten.
It's just another reminder that the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself in love (Galatians 5:6).

Painting by faith
One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is, "How does God reveal what you are to paint?" There is no formula, but I always know when it's Him and He seems to guide my brushstrokes.
Sometimes I have a dream or vision and other times I just have a picture flashing in my mind. I may even begin painting knowing only one or two colors I want to use. I simply paint by faith from there. I ask Him to come and He always does.
Other times I have an idea and carry around that idea until I think it's the right time to release it on canvas. That's what happened with Pearl of Great Price. God gave me revelation of that painting months before I finally painted it at a conference.
Some of my favorite paintings have been commissioned pieces of other people's dreams or visions. Protectors of the Portal was the result of a vision a conference speaker shared that greatly impressed me.
Once in a while when I'm painting at a conference I get an idea ahead of time, and I can even prepare a bit. That's what happened with Bridal Dance. Even though I walked into the conference session that day knowing what I wanted to express, Holy Spirit showed up in such an amazing way that it became one of my most memorable and emotional painting experiences. I couldn't stop crying. I'm not surprised that Bridal Dance seems to be the most impacting and popular of all my paintings to date. |

Janice's workshop at Expression Florida
I am very excited to be participating in Expression Florida in Tallahassee October 31 - November 2. This is a gathering of artists and professionals seeking to display the attributes and character of God through various artistic expressions, extending into the community in a variety of artistic and professional fields. it is also the desire of Expression Florida to serve as a launching pad for artists and the creativity flowing through them.
I will be leading the workshop "Releasing the Art and Creativity of Heaven" on Saturday, November 1. For more information about Expression Florida go to www.expressionflorida.com. Hope to see some of you Floridians there! |
